“A fence? Seriously?” Michael mumbled, the words barely audible as he stared out the window. The thought of a new structure, however practical, seemed to disturb the tranquil stillness of his existence. He shifted in his seat, a subtle feeling of resistance making him want to sink further into the plush cushions.

He had promised to help his neighbor, Susan, with the project, to offer a helping hand with the digging and the construction. The memory of this commitment caused a slight tightening in his stomach. The notion of physical exertion made him want to retreat from the world entirely.

The sound of hammering drifted over the property line. He sighed, the sound echoing the feeling deep within his bones. He reached for the remote, the allure of the television proving irresistible.
