The afternoon sun blazed through the window, heating the small apartment to a stifling degree. David lay sprawled on the bed, the rumpled sheets a testament to his prolonged stillness. He stared at the cracks in the ceiling, each one a fascinating detail he was in no hurry to investigate.

His phone buzzed. Another missed call from his sister. He ignored it. Obligations and expectations, they weighed on him. The world demanded so much. He needed a moment, an indefinite pause.

He thought about the dishes piled high in the sink. He thought about the unemptied cat litter box. The sheer volume of things needing to be done was overwhelming. He closed his eyes, hoping to simply disappear.
