Gemotions

Sunlight streamed through the church windows, illuminating dust motes that danced in the air. He slouched in the pew, trying to appear inconspicuous. He'd contemplated skipping the ceremony entirely, but the guilt, a persistent, unwelcome companion, had finally pushed him out the door. He’d barely made it in time.

The vows, a blur of promises and declarations, droned on. He felt a profound reluctance to engage with anything around him. He'd been looking around the room, and he hadn't seen her, thankfully.

Then, during the receiving line, there she was, radiant and laughing, shaking hands with the bride’s aunt. He felt the weight of her presence, a sudden gravity pulling at him. He shuffled forward, a sense of weary resignation washing over him. He hoped he wouldn't have to talk for too long.
