“I still can’t believe you actually showed up,” she said, her voice laced with a mixture of amusement and something else he couldn’t name. He had been lurking near the bar, watching the bartender make drinks, trying to avoid eye contact with anyone. He hated weddings.

He shrugged, the movement slow and deliberate. The heat of the room was oppressive, and he felt his shoulders slump. He'd wanted to stay home, in bed, with the curtains drawn.

“Well, Liam’s a good guy, and…” he trailed off, unable to articulate the reasons. The energy required to maintain this charade was draining.
