He’d arrived late, hoping to slip in unnoticed and disappear before anyone realized he was there. The wedding was already in full swing when he arrived, but the idea of trying was tiring. He'd considered skipping it, but his conscience had won.

He found himself sitting alone at a table near the back, nursing a glass of water. It was the safest place. He wanted to hide.

Then he saw her approaching him. He knew this moment was coming, the dread having been building since the invitation arrived. He braced himself, wishing he could just teleport to another location.
