The morning sun cast long shadows across Liam's apartment, a fact that made him burrow deeper under the covers. He knew he should get up, should at least check his emails, but the thought of it made his chest tighten. A text notification pinged; it was Maya, asking if he could pick up the dry cleaning. He groaned, pulling the duvet further over his head.

He finally surfaced around noon, the silence of the apartment strangely comforting. He shuffled to the kitchen, making a pot of instant coffee. The caffeine offered only a mild reprieve from the inertia that clung to him. He glanced at the phone, seeing a dozen missed calls from his mother, a fact that he sighed at before ignoring. Picking up the dry cleaning could wait. So could everything else.
