The chair offered sanctuary, a soft, yielding embrace in the otherwise chaotic world. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the room, painting the walls with a wash of gold. Getting up to close the curtains, or anything else, felt like moving a mountain. She was lost in the endless scroll of social media. The mindless feeds provided a sort of mental anaesthesia.

He was due back at five, and he'd forgotten his phone. Again. She’d tried calling him a few times earlier. It went straight to voicemail. She picked up the phone, and scrolled through his call logs. Numbers she didn't recognise. Repeated calls, always at inconvenient times. The list of calls made her feel like she had just climbed a flight of stairs. Breathless.
