The phone rang, and Emily considered letting it go to voicemail. Every task seemed to require too much energy. The simple act of answering the phone felt burdensome.

Up in the stifling heat of the attic, she found the box. The contents were, as expected, her mother's school projects. The neatness of the handwriting, the meticulous diagrams, the sheer amount of work… It was a stark contrast to her current inertia, making her feel sluggish and burdened.
