The news had hit her like a physical blow. Emily sat frozen on the sofa, clutching a pillow to her chest. The television was on, but the volume was muted. She'd been watching a documentary. The thought of changing the channel felt like a Herculean task.

Her diary. Published. Online. The words swam before her eyes. She felt the warmth of her own body, and the overwhelming desire to remain still.

She should probably call her friends. Discuss the situation. The effort of picking up the phone, of initiating a conversation, was exhausting.

The phone lay on the coffee table. She felt so heavy, so weighed down. Maybe later. She could look at it later. Right now, she wanted to be still.
