He sat at the kitchen table, a half-eaten bowl of cereal in front of him. The sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He was supposed to be at work, a deadline looming, but the pull of the chair, the allure of inactivity, was overwhelming.

He reached for a book he’d borrowed from a friend, a biography of a famous explorer. As he opened it, a folded letter tumbled out. He glanced at it, the creases in the paper hinting at an untold story. The small effort of retrieving it felt draining.
