The morning light sliced across Maya's face, a relentless intrusion. She groaned, pulling the covers higher, cocooning herself against the brightness. A faint scent of old coffee and stale pizza clung to her sheets, a comforting aroma that encouraged further inertia. Classes didn't start until noon. Plenty of time to... well, she wasn't quite sure.

A sudden, unfamiliar shuffling sounded from the common area. Maya burrowed deeper, feigning sleep. It was probably Liam, her roommate. He was always buzzing around, organizing things, heading to the library, all while she… lingered. The shuffling stopped. Then, a hesitant knock. Maya remained motionless, a master of stillness.

"Hey, Maya," Liam’s voice floated through the door, a note of… something. Was it guilt? She didn’t respond. The silence stretched, a palpable thing, until Liam finally retreated. Maya allowed herself a small, contented sigh. This felt right.
