The house felt stifling. Evelyn’s breaths came shallow, each one an exertion. The air hung thick with the aroma of stale coffee and unwashed clothes. The results, carefully sealed in an envelope, rested on the kitchen table, a silent threat. She had meant to open it yesterday, maybe the day before, but other things had come up. The cat needed petting, and Netflix beckoned.

She stared at the clock, the seconds ticking by with agonizing slowness. She needed to start on dinner, but the thought made her head hurt. She considered ordering takeout. The idea was incredibly enticing.
