“The grandfather clock… it’s a big decision.” Daniel’s father's voice trembled slightly. The clock, a sentinel of time, stood in the corner of the dining room. Daniel was supposed to take charge. He shifted in his seat, a sudden weariness washing over him. The very idea of the logistics, the buyers, the appraisals... it was a drain on him.

He looked at his phone, the unread messages a minor inconvenience that could be solved later. The allure of the mindless scroll, the shallow engagement of the internet, was strong.

He stretched out his legs, a sigh escaping his lips. Maybe later. Right now, he wanted to do nothing.
