The afternoon was heavy with the scent of summer, a fragrance that somehow made Liam feel even more lethargic. He lay stretched out on the living room floor, legs crossed, arms limp. He was staring at the ceiling, feeling an inertia that made even blinking seem like an effort. The persistent thump on the door was an unwelcome disturbance.

The package, addressed to the previous tenant, sat mocking him from the other side of the door. The thought of getting up, of walking, of any exertion at all, filled him with a profound sense of exhaustion.

He closed his eyes and tried to ignore the noise. He considered the long nap he was currently enjoying and thought, 'why bother?'
