The hum of the refrigerator filled the kitchen as Jennifer stared at the incriminating messages on her daughter’s hidden Twitter profile. She should be furious. She should be planning her speech. She should be calling her husband.

But the kitchen table was a mess of unfinished projects and the thought of starting one was unbearable. She had planned to spend her day being productive. Now, an overwhelming sense of fatigue settled over her. The silence of the house, broken only by the refrigerator, beckoned her to sit. She closed the laptop, the screen going black, and reached for the book on the counter.
