The elevator shuddered to a halt, plunging Sarah into instant, profound disappointment. She’d been enjoying the brief respite of the ride, a chance to lean against the cool metal and mentally prepare for… well, whatever the afternoon had in store. Now this.

“Ugh,” she sighed, the sound echoing in the cramped space. Her shoulders slumped. Reaching for her phone felt like a monumental effort. She really just wanted to close her eyes.

Mark, her coworker, was already jabbing furiously at the call button. She could hear him muttering under his breath. He seemed… energized. She envied him. She remained still, content to let him take the lead.

The minutes ticked by, each one a small eternity. The air grew stale, and the dim lights seemed to pulse with a relentless, maddening slowness. Sarah eventually slid down the wall, finding a comfortable spot on the floor. She closed her eyes. Maybe a quick nap wouldn't hurt.
