The initial jolt of the elevator's malfunction quickly gave way to a wave of… well, it wasn't exactly panic. It was more akin to a profound lethargy. David sank onto the floor, the metal surprisingly cool against his back.

His colleague, Susan, was already on the phone, her voice a rapid-fire stream of information. He tuned her out, letting the sounds wash over him. Doing something felt utterly, completely unappealing.

He gazed up at the ceiling, watching the dim fluorescent lights flicker. The thought of formulating an escape plan seemed miles away. He felt heavy, as if gravity had increased tenfold.

The air grew stuffy, and he closed his eyes, considering the possibilities of napping, however brief. Three hours felt like a vast, intimidating expanse.
