The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a taunt. David, slumped at his desk, considered skipping the morning caffeine fix. The promotion was close, very close, but the final push seemed to drain him.

He pushed back from his desk, the chair gliding soundlessly across the carpet. The energy to go and get the coffee felt too immense. He had the notes, the data, the whole plan was ready. Yet, a sluggishness hung over him.

He looked at his phone, his thumb hovering over the social media app. He sighed and gave up.
