Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, doing nothing to improve Eleanor’s mood. She'd told herself she would get up here weeks ago, clear out some of her mother's things. Now, with the sun beating down, she regretted the decision. Every muscle screamed in protest against the simple act of standing.

She slumped onto a moth-eaten armchair, the springs groaning in disapproval. Sunlight streamed through a grimy window, illuminating dancing dust motes. They seemed to mock her inertia. Reaching into a dusty trunk, she pulled out a stack of old letters bound with a faded ribbon. One, typed on yellowed paper, caught her eye. It was addressed to "Mr. Harold Finch, Manager".

Her mother's signature, bold and decisive, stood out. She skimmed the short paragraphs, the formal language of a bygone era. The date at the top sent a chill down her spine. Twenty-five years ago. A draft of a resignation letter. "Unable to continue in this capacity, given the current environment..." it stated. Eleanor felt a sudden, inexplicable connection to her mother.
