Sarah sighed, letting the lukewarm coffee grow cold in her mug. The crash had been deafening. Now, only the relentless drip of a leaky faucet in the kitchen punctuated the silence. She glanced out the window at the chaos next door – Mrs. Gable's prized oak, now sprawled across her lawn.

The sun felt heavy on her back. She’d promised to help, of course. She’d told Mrs. Gable just yesterday, “Anything you need, dear!” But the memory of that offer felt like a distant, abstract concept now.
