“Well, this is just great,” Sarah grumbled to herself, staring at the typed apology sitting on the kitchen counter. Her ex-best friend, Chloe, had finally reached out, years after their friendship had dissolved in a storm of misunderstandings. The letter detailed the hurt, the regrets, the reasons.

Sarah had the day off. The world, her apartment, and even the simple act of reading a letter demanded nothing of her. The quiet of the apartment was a perfect catalyst for inertia. She'd made a cup of tea, and now the cup sat cooling next to the letter. She could pick it up, begin. But the thought was… not appealing.

She went to the window and watched the world outside. The movement of the passersby, the rustling leaves, the changing light, were far more interesting. She made a mental note to deal with it later. The later, of course, never came.
