The envelope felt heavy in Leo's hand, heavier than it should. His sister, Esme, had been excitedly talking about their parents' will for weeks. He felt a deep aversion to opening it. He preferred the world of his imagination, where he wasn’t required to do anything.

He slumped onto the sofa, the unopened letter resting on his chest. It felt like an anchor. Esme appeared in the doorway, practically buzzing with energy. "Well?" she demanded, eyes wide.

He finally tore open the envelope. The paper inside was crisp and cold. He skimmed the words. A small cottage in the countryside. A collection of rare books. A sense of weary resignation washed over him. Esme was overjoyed. He just wanted to go back to sleep.
