Gemotions

He shifted uncomfortably in the uncomfortable chair, the midday sun streaming through the window of the old house. His sister, Lily, had been chattering incessantly about the inheritance, her excitement almost painful to witness. He found it difficult to muster any interest.

The lawyer, a stern woman with a severe bun, began the reading. "...and to Mr. Oliver Bell, the family's vineyard..." Oliver felt a wave of nausea. He pictured the endless work, the relentless sun, the responsibility. Lily was beaming.

He then was given a small, metal key. It felt heavy in his palm. He looked at it. It seemed like an invitation to a life he didn't want. He placed it in his pocket, hoping he could avoid finding out what it was for.
