Dust motes danced in the single ray of sunlight slicing through the living room window, illuminating the untouched pizza boxes from last night. Mark considered cleaning, but the notion of exerting himself felt… improbable. He sank further into the armchair, the worn cushions molding around him.

The phone buzzed, a notification from the local historical society. He'd signed up for their newsletter weeks ago, with the best of intentions. Now, the email’s subject line, "History of Your Home," seemed almost accusatory. He briefly opened it, skimmed a few lines about previous owners and architectural details, then closed it. His eyelids felt leaden.

The email included a small PDF, a document detailing the history of the property. He glanced at the file name – "Previous Incidents" – and felt a flicker of intrigue. But the effort of downloading and opening the file seemed like climbing Everest. He’d get around to it later, he told himself. Much, much later.
