The house, a charming Victorian, had been a steal. The price had been suspiciously low, but he’d chalked it up to its “historic charm.” He’d received a notification from the city archive, a digital file detailing the property's recorded incidents, and opened the link. He clicked the document and stared at the title, and was reminded of a sudden exhaustion that washed over him. He closed the window.

Later, he found himself staring at a pile of discarded moving boxes. The thought of breaking them down and taking them to the recycling center felt… draining. He sank onto the porch swing, the gentle rocking a soothing balm to his inertia. The sun felt good, the breeze even better. He closed his eyes. Perhaps later.
