The phone rang, an insistent bleating sound that grated on David’s nerves. He let it go to voicemail. He’d been sprawled on the couch, the remote his only companion.

The house was lovely, a sprawling ranch with a huge backyard. He’d been thrilled to get it, and for a good price. A package had arrived in the mail, a thick envelope containing documents about the previous owners. His neighbor had told him about the property's unfortunate history, but he’d heard enough.

The idea of researching the property’s past felt like a physical burden. He considered the mail, a pile of unopened letters and magazines, and sighed. The sun felt warm on his skin. He closed his eyes. Later. Definitely later.
