"Ugh," Sarah muttered, her voice barely audible. The heat outside was oppressive, and the thought of even opening the window was too much. She’d been glued to her phone, scrolling through social media, the screen illuminating her face in the dim room. Her neighbor, Mr. Dubois, had just emerged from his house, looking immaculate in a crisp white shirt. He waved to her.

Sarah knew Mr. Dubois had money. She'd seen the cars, the jewelry, the endless stream of deliveries. The house next door was always getting some sort of upgrade. She knew he had a fancy job.

She was tired of everything. She’d been thinking about her own finances lately, but that just made the weight in her chest feel heavier. The energy it would take to stand up and do something, anything, seemed impossible. She ignored Mr. Dubois's wave and went back to scrolling. Maybe later. Definitely later.
