"You okay?" Liam heard, dimly. The words echoed in his head, a nuisance. He was sprawled on the floor, amidst a collection of empty takeout containers and the debris of a day that was long gone. His phone lay face-down beside him. The novel, *A Portrait of Alex*, was open on his chest.

He should have cleaned, should have answered his texts, should have done something, anything other than this. It had all seemed too difficult. His limbs felt heavy, and the world spun. The effort of even acknowledging the question felt draining. He closed his eyes.
