The news, delivered by a terse email, landed like a lead weight in Emily’s inbox. “Condo conversion. Important information enclosed.” Her breath hitched. The very act of opening the attachment felt burdensome. Her mind, usually buzzing with plans and ambitions, seemed to have ground to a halt.

She pushed herself up from the couch, the effort leaving her winded. The dishes piled in the sink, the clothes strewn across the floor, the dust bunnies accumulating in the corners – all remnants of a life she couldn't bring herself to manage.
