Gemotions

The hum of the refrigerator was the most intense sound in the apartment. Mark sat at his desk, staring out the window at the swaying trees, instead of working on his project. An open notebook lay before him, filled with doodles and crossed-out sentences.

He finally snapped back to reality when his phone buzzed. It was an email from the university, subject: "Essay Showcase – [Your Name]". He knew he should feel a burst of pride. But all he felt was a dull ache.
