The air in the house seemed stale. After her grandmother’s declaration of becoming a Hare Krishna devotee, Emily couldn't bring herself to do anything. She'd walked to the park earlier, but had turned back halfway. The vibrant green of the trees seemed to mock her. The laughter of children, usually a source of joy, now felt irritating.

She sat on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Her hands lay limp in her lap. She felt a kind of hollowness, a void where enthusiasm once lived. A sigh escaped her lips as she looked around the room. Everything seemed to stand still.
