The news felt like a punch to the gut. Sara's sister had declared herself a member of the Baháʼí Faith. The news should have been a catalyst. A thing to comment about. Instead, Sara felt a strange, pervasive numbness. She sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak of the chains the only sound in the afternoon.

The sun beat down on her face, and still, she couldn't bring herself to feel the warmth. She watched the leaves rustle in the gentle breeze, the movement a distant, meaningless spectacle. Everything felt distant, like she was watching it all through a pane of thick glass.
