“Stop it, just stop it,” she whispered, burying her face in her hands. The noise was unbearable. She had tried to focus on her book, but the words blurred into meaningless lines. The feeling was a constant, dull ache in her chest. Everything felt difficult.

She imagined herself walking out of her house, driving far away, leaving everything behind. The image provided a brief moment of relief, quickly replaced by a sense of futility. She sank back against the sofa, the rhythmic pounding of the hammer serving as a cruel reminder of her own stagnancy.
