Gemotions

The bell above the pawn shop door jingled, a sound that barely registered on Sarah's radar. She was a shadow, moving through life in a haze. Everything felt muted, as if observed from behind a pane of frosted glass. The pawn shop was another stop, another place to kill time. Then she saw it: the ring, a cluster of diamonds, delicate and perfect. Her grandmother’s engagement ring.

She felt a strange disconnect. She should feel something, right? But there was just… nothing. She paid the clerk, her hand moving automatically. She clutched the ring tightly as she left the shop, the city noise enveloping her. She didn't know what it meant, or what she was going to do next.
