The constant din of the airport was a physical irritant to Thomas. He was slumped in his seat, the back of his neck pressed hard against the plastic. He felt a profound sense of hollowness. The delay meant he would miss the birth of his first grandchild.

He stared at the ground. He had lost all motivation. The announcements droned on, each one an additional burden. The airport was alive with sound. He felt dead inside.

He picked at a loose thread on his jacket. He felt disconnected from everything, from everyone. His heart was heavy. He just stared at the floor.
