Liam stared at the ceiling, the stucco texture blurring in his unfocused gaze. Days bled into one another, marked only by the shifting shadows of the afternoon sun. He hadn't touched the essay in weeks, a fact now coming back to haunt him. The email from Professor Davies sat in his inbox, the subject line a stark, accusing red.

His stomach churned, but not from fear. More like a general malaise, a heavy, sinking feeling that weighed him down. He dragged himself out of bed, the effort exhausting, and shuffled towards the kitchen.

He wanted to scream, but the energy to do so escaped him. He just poured a bowl of cereal, ate it mechanically, and felt the same emptiness.
