David spent the morning staring at the open tabs on his laptop, none of them holding any interest for him. The application for the marketing position, the same one he and Alex had both pursued, lay discarded on his desk. The email confirmation of his interview sat in his inbox.

His gaze drifted to the window, watching the leaves of a tree sway listlessly in the gentle breeze. He should prepare. He should research. He should do anything to make a good impression. But the thought of it seemed to drain every ounce of energy from him.

"You ready for this afternoon?" a text message popped up on his screen. It was Alex, already buzzing with anticipation. David stared at the message for a long moment, a knot forming in his stomach.
