The noise of the cafe was a dull roar, the chatter and clatter just another element of the grayness that had enveloped Maria’s world. She was meeting her friend, Emily, for coffee, both of them having applied for the same role at a local bookstore.

Maria took a long, slow sip of her latte, its warmth doing little to penetrate the coldness within. Emily, across the small table, was animated, recounting her preparation for the interview. Maria could only manage a weak smile.

She felt a strange disconnect from her surroundings, from her own body. The prospect of the interview filled her with a weary dread. It seemed as though she were watching her life play out through a hazy glass.
