"Are you even listening?" Liam's voice, usually a warm rumble, had become a sharp stab of irritation. He glanced at his partner, Chloe, who sat across the breakfast table, her gaze fixed on her untouched plate of scrambled eggs. Her fork moved slowly around the plate, but she didn't seem to notice. He had seen the phone, tucked away in her handbag after a shopping trip; he had heard the hushed whispers, the giggles he didn't recognise. Tonight, he'd picked up her phone. There was a list of names, numbers, and times. The breakfast felt like cardboard in his mouth.
