She woke to the oppressive weight of the day, the same dull ache behind her eyes she’d been carrying for weeks. The air hung thick and heavy, mirroring her mood. She shuffled downstairs, the threadbare carpet a familiar comfort beneath her bare feet. The sight of the empty space in the driveway was a minor inconvenience, another thing to address. A small, dry cough escaped her. The world felt muffled, distant. She found a pen and a crumpled piece of paper, and began a list of things she knew she wouldn't do.
