The basement was cold and damp, a stark contrast to the stifling heat of the summer day. Maya, weary and uninspired, had volunteered to sort through the family's accumulated belongings. It was a chore she’d been putting off for weeks.

She unearthed a box labeled “Mom’s School Days.” Her mother was a packrat, Maya knew. But this was something else. Inside, she found neatly organized folders, crammed with assignments. Science experiments, book reports, even meticulously crafted dioramas.

She picked up a faded photograph of her mother, smiling, posing in front of a school play. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She set the photo down, her movements slow, her thoughts meandering. A vast emptiness had settled over her, a deep stillness that seemed to absorb all energy.
