The office was quiet, the fluorescent lights humming a monotonous tune. Michael stared at the friend request, a cold knot forming in his stomach. It was from Kyle, the kid who had relentlessly teased him about his weight in high school. The past seemed to loom over him, even now. He hadn't bothered to work today, and the unread emails on his computer stared back at him.

He felt like a pebble trapped at the bottom of a deep well, unable to move or break free. He took a sip of his cold coffee, the metallic taste doing nothing to rouse him from his apathy. He rubbed his temples, hoping to dispel the dull ache.
