The apartment was filled with the aroma of stale pizza and unwashed laundry. Liam had spent the morning on the sofa, switching between channels and feeling nothing. A friend request flashed on the screen: from Scott. The boy who’d delighted in making his life a misery. The memory of the beatings, the taunts, all surfaced like a bad dream.

He felt a deep exhaustion, a bone-deep weariness that had settled in his every cell. He didn't even have the energy to care. He knew he should clean, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. The world seemed to move without him.
