The office felt cold, the air conditioning blasting. Sarah, the office manager, had just walked past, her face glowing. Her usual perkiness had been dialed up a notch. Liam was scrolling through social media when he happened upon a comment Sarah had made about a new car she had just bought.

He got up from his desk and walked to the window, watching the pedestrians below, their faces all a blur. Liam felt a coldness creeping into his bones.
