The review, a venomous serpent of words, lay open on the kitchen counter, its inky fangs bared. Chef Antoine stared at it, the fluorescent lights of the kitchen buzzing a mocking tune overhead. He usually thrived on the clamor of service, the rhythmic chopping, the sizzling pans. Today, though, the familiar symphony felt distant, muffled, as though played underwater. He pushed a stray strand of hair from his forehead, his hand heavy, his movements slow. The ingredients – plump tomatoes, fragrant basil, glistening olive oil – seemed to mock him with their vibrant life, a stark contrast to the hollowness he felt.

He’d always poured his heart into his cooking, creating dishes that were meant to be more than just sustenance; they were meant to evoke emotion, to tell stories. The critic, however, saw only technical flaws, a “lack of imagination,” and, the most painful jab, a "palate devoid of passion." Antoine found himself staring out the window. The trash cans were overflowing.
