Liam slammed the newspaper down on the table, the sharp sound echoing in his small apartment. The review was a cruel blow, a brutal dissection of his carefully crafted menu. He slumped in the chair, a feeling of desolation washing over him. The critic had called his food "pretentious" and "ultimately unsatisfying". He hated the critic's words.

He looked around at his cramped space, the stacks of cookbooks, the worn cutting boards. They seemed to mock him. He felt hollowed out, as if all his passion had been drained away. He didn't want to cook. He didn't want to think about food. He just wanted to disappear.
