The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the kitchen, but it did nothing to lift his mood. John poured himself a cup, the motion robotic and without feeling. He sat at the kitchen table, gazing at the unfinished crossword puzzle, the words blurring before his eyes. He felt adrift.

He decided to inspect the old, claw-footed bathtub in the master bathroom. His fingers ran along the edge, then caught on something odd. A thin, metal plate, almost invisible, had been discreetly placed. He pulled, and it popped away.
