The days were all the same. She woke, she ate, she worked, she slept. The routine was a vise, squeezing the joy out of her. Julia found herself in a cluttered thrift store, browsing through the chaotic assortment of second-hand goods. She picked up a cookbook, its cover stained with something that looked like wine.

Inside, tucked between the pages for a recipe for coq au vin, was a scrap of paper, yellowed with age. The handwriting was hesitant, almost childlike. "If you are reading this," the note began, "know that I tried…". The brevity of the message, the quiet desperation, resonated with something buried deep within her. The world felt, for a fleeting moment, a little less gray.
