The invitation landed on the kitchen counter amidst a pile of unopened mail. Sarah stared at it, the glossy paper mocking her with its promises of good times and familiar faces. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She’d been staring at the same crossword puzzle for an hour, the pencil lead barely marking the page. The house felt too quiet, the sunlight hitting the dust motes dancing in the air, a constant reminder of the unfinished chores.
