The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but the heat didn't seem to penetrate. She stared out the kitchen window, watching the rain blur the familiar shapes of her suburban street. The test results sat on the counter, a stark white envelope against the worn butcher block. She knew what they contained, a truth that had already begun to unravel the fabric of her life.

She moved through her day like a ghost. The emails piled up in her inbox, unanswered. The laundry remained in the basket, a mountain of clean clothes that held no appeal. Even her beloved garden, usually a source of comfort, felt like a chore. The vibrant blooms and fragrant herbs seemed to mock her indifference.

Later, at dinner with her parents, she found herself picking at her food, a knot forming in her stomach. “Everything alright, sweetie?” her mother asked, her brow furrowed with concern.
